6 Best Front Alternatives (2026)
Front starts at $25 a seat, but Starter caps at 10 seats and AI is sold per seat and per conversation. We compared 6 alternatives on pricing, AI costs and fit, with honest tradeoffs.
The short answer: Front is an excellent collaborative inbox when support, sales and operations share the same customer threads, and teams that live in email should think twice before leaving. Switch if you have outgrown Starter's 10-seat and single-channel limits, if paying $20 per seat for Copilot plus per-conversation Autopilot makes AI hard to budget, or if what you really need is a support tool with live chat and an AI agent, not a better email client.
Front's pitch is email that works like a team sport: shared inboxes, comments on threads, assignments, and rules. It is polished and fast. The friction shows up in two places: the jump from Starter ($25) to Professional ($65) once you need more than one channel or more than 10 seats, and AI that is sold separately until Enterprise ($105).
Here are six alternatives, what each costs, and where Front still beats them. No affiliate links. For a wider vendor map, see our alternatives hub.

Why teams look for a Front alternative#
The Starter ceiling arrives early
Starter is $25 per seat per month but caps at 10 seats, one channel type, and up to 10 automation rules. Add SMS or WhatsApp next to email, or hire seat number 11, and you are on Professional at $65 per seat. For a 12-person team that is $780 a month on annual billing before any AI.
AI is two separate meters
Copilot (drafting, account signals, next steps) is $20 per seat per month on Starter and Professional. Autopilot (the AI agent) is usage-based, listed as starting at $0.05 per conversation, with the full rate card behind a sales conversation. So AI costs scale with headcount and with volume at the same time, and the per-resolution number is not on the public page.
It is an inbox first, a support tool second
Front shines for email collaboration across functions. Teams whose customers expect live chat on the website, a help center with an AI agent in front of it, and self-serve answers often find they are assembling that around Front rather than getting it out of the box.
Where Front still wins#
Front is the better choice when:
- Several departments share customer threads. Sales, account management and support working the same conversation is what Front is designed for.
- Email is the main channel and will stay that way. The inbox experience is among the best available.
- You want Copilot, QA and CSAT bundled. Enterprise at $105 includes AI Copilot, Smart QA and Smart CSAT in the seat price.
- Your team likes working in an email-shaped tool. Adoption is easy because it feels familiar.
The 6 best Front alternatives#
1. SupportWire
SupportWire puts chat and email in one inbox, with an AI agent (Kal) that resolves conversations from your knowledge base, on a single plan.
Full disclosure: we built it. Judge it on the facts below.
How it differs from Front:
- One plan, no seat cap. $19 per seat per month with everything included. No 10-seat ceiling and no channel-type limit.
- One AI meter, published. 50 AI resolutions each month are included, then $0.49 per resolution. Drafting and Copilot are free, and there are no AI conversation caps.
- Live chat and AI agent built in. The widget, the inbox and the AI agent are the same product.
- Free lite seats for teammates who only view and comment, and a 14-day trial with no card.
Where Front is better: cross-team email collaboration, shared drafts and the overall feel of a team email client.
Pricing: $19 per seat per month, $0.49 per AI resolution after 50. See the pricing page.
2. Help Scout
Help Scout is the closest in spirit: an email-first shared inbox with a strong knowledge base and the Beacon widget, built specifically for customer support.
Why switch from Front: support-specific features (Docs, satisfaction ratings, customer profiles) without paying for cross-team collaboration you do not use.
Watch for: AI resolutions are $0.75 each, and the product is lighter on structured ticketing than a full help desk.
Pricing (verified Oct 29, 2026, annual): $25, $45 and $75 per user per month. See Help Scout pricing, Help Scout alternatives and Help Scout vs SupportWire.
3. Missive
Missive is a collaborative inbox for email, chat and SMS, popular with small teams that like Front's model but not its price.
Why switch from Front: the same "comment on the thread, assign, share drafts" workflow at a lower seat price.
Watch for: it is a team inbox, not a full help desk. AI uses Missive credits or your own key, and limits are not published on the pricing page.
Pricing (verified Nov 4, 2026, annual): Starter $14, Productive $24, Business $36 per user per month.
4. Zendesk
Zendesk is the enterprise help desk: deep ticketing, voice, a large app marketplace and compliance coverage.
Why switch from Front: structured ticketing, SLAs and reporting at a scale Front's inbox model is not built for.
Watch for: add-ons stack up. Copilot is $50 per agent per month, and setup takes real effort.
Pricing (verified Oct 29, 2026, annual): $19, $55 and $115 per agent per month across the main tiers. See Zendesk vs SupportWire.
5. Intercom
Intercom leads on in-app messaging, product tours and proactive outreach, with Fin as its AI agent.
Why switch from Front: a customer-facing messenger and an AI agent at the center of the product, instead of an inbox with AI added on.
Watch for: Fin is $0.99 per outcome on top of seats.
Pricing (verified Oct 29, 2026, annual): Essential $29, Advanced $85, Expert $132 per seat per month. Try the Intercom pricing calculator or see Intercom vs SupportWire.
6. Zoho Desk
Zoho Desk is a ticket-first help desk from the Zoho suite, with the lowest seat price on this list and a Free edition for three users.
Why switch from Front: much lower cost per seat, structured workflows, and native ties to Zoho CRM.
Watch for: live chat is an Enterprise feature, and telephony and Zia AI start on Professional.
Pricing (verified Nov 4, 2026, annual): Express $7, Standard $14, Professional $23, Enterprise $40 per user per month. Our Zoho Desk alternatives guide covers its tradeoffs.
AI cost models compared#
| Tool | Model | What you pay for |
|---|---|---|
| Front | Per seat + per conversation | $20/seat Copilot below Enterprise; Autopilot from $0.05 per conversation, full rate card via sales |
| SupportWire | Per resolution | $0.49 per resolved conversation after 50 free a month; drafting and Copilot free |
| Help Scout | Per resolution | $0.75 per AI resolution |
| Missive | Credits or BYOK | Missive AI credits or your own model key |
| Zendesk | Per seat add-on | $50/agent Copilot |
| Intercom | Per outcome | $0.99 per Fin outcome |
| Zoho Desk | Bundled by tier + BYOK | Higher edition for Zia; your own model usage with BYOK |
A quick way to compare: take last month's conversation count, estimate the share AI could resolve, and multiply by each vendor's per-resolution price. Then add any per-seat AI fees times your headcount. Per-seat AI fees punish large teams; per-resolution fees punish high volume at a high rate. More on this in what AI customer support really costs and what ticket deflection is.
Who should switch, and who should stay#
Stay on Front if several teams work the same customer threads, email is your main channel, or you are on Enterprise and use the bundled Copilot, QA and CSAT.
Switch if you have hit the Starter limits and Professional's $65 seat feels like a lot for one more channel, you want AI priced on one published meter, or you need live chat and an AI agent as the core of support. For a broader look at the category, see shared inbox software for small teams.
Migration checklist#
- Export conversations and contacts from Front, and keep the raw export.
- List the rules, macros and tags in active use. Rebuild only those; Front accounts accumulate rules nobody owns.
- Map each shared inbox to a queue or team in the new tool before go-live.
- Import or write your help articles first if the new tool has an AI agent; its answers come from them.
- Move channels: forward shared addresses, reconnect SMS and social, and replace any chat widget.
- Run both in parallel until the Front queue is empty.
- Check your renewal date and notice period before you cancel, so you are not billed for another term.
The bottom line#
Front is the right tool when email collaboration across teams is the job. When the job is customer support, with chat, a help center and an AI agent at volume, the Starter limits and two separate AI meters are what push teams to look around. Pick the alternative that fixes the reason you are leaving.
If one plan with chat, email and AI at $0.49 per resolution is the reason, see SupportWire pricing. For more comparisons, browse the alternatives hub.
Frequently asked questions
It depends on what you use Front for. If it is customer support with chat, email and AI, SupportWire is $19 per seat per month on one plan with AI resolutions at $0.49 each after 50 free a month. If you want the calmest email-first shared inbox, Help Scout. If you want a cheaper collaborative inbox for a small team, Missive. If you need enterprise ticketing, Zendesk. If in-app messaging matters most, Intercom.
Verified Nov 4, 2026 on Front's pricing page, billed annually: Starter $25 per seat per month (up to 10 seats), Professional $65 (up to 50 seats), Enterprise $105. Monthly billing costs more; Front advertises saving 24% with annual billing. AI is extra below Enterprise.
Two ways. Copilot is $20 per seat per month as an add-on on Starter and Professional and is included on Enterprise, along with Smart QA and Smart CSAT. Autopilot, Front's AI agent, is usage-based and listed as starting at $0.05 per conversation; the full rate card is not on the public pricing page, so ask sales for the price per resolved conversation before you commit.
No free plan is listed on Front's pricing page. Starter offers a free trial. If you need a free tier, Zoho Desk has a Free edition with three users for email ticketing, and Help Scout has a limited free plan.
Starter is capped at 10 seats and a single channel type, with up to 10 automation rules. Adding SMS, social or WhatsApp, more rules, or an 11th seat moves you to Professional at $65 per seat, which is a 2.6x jump in the seat price.
Export conversations and contacts, list the rules and macros you actually use, rebuild the top ones in the new tool, move your shared addresses and channels, and run both tools in parallel until the old queue is empty. The checklist in this post covers the order.
